What is the International Cadet Class?

The International Cadet Class

The Cadet Class is considered to be a family, the family culture is supportive of all the sailors. People leaving the class miss the culture of the class more than anything else. At all of our major events there are always a few Cadet “tragics” who join us to catch up with old friends and keep in touch with the class.

The Sailors are expected to live up to the cadet oath:-

“As a Cadet member of the International Cadet Class I promise to observe the class rules and at all times to further the aims of the class.

I shall do my best to foster understanding and friendship throughout the world.

I shall never attempt to win a race by any means other than fair sailing.”

The Class is one of the few sports where 7 year olds compete with and work with 17 year olds. It is one of the few sports where Boys and Girls compete as equals. The mix of the Australian team is typical of the Class and reflects the diversity of the class, the teams was selected on their performance at the Australian Nationals. In the 2014 Australian Team we have one boat of boy and girl siblings and three boats of boys and three boats of girls.

The Skippers need to learn to lead, mentor and manage their typically younger crew, great life skills for these young champions.

World Championships

The World Championships are hosted by a different country each year and have taken place in Australia, Argentina, India and various European countries. In a series of indicator events every national Cadet Class Association determines its seven best teams to compete in this event.  This year’s Australian National Championships were held after Christmas, 2013 at the Royal yacht Club of Victoria. http://www.auscadet2013.com/html/rycv.html

The 2014 Cadet Class World Championship will be hosted by the United Kingdom Cadet Class Association at the Weymouth and Portland national Sailing Academy, the venue of the 2012 Olympic sailing.  Over 250 junior sailors from around the world will be competing at this event.   http://cadetworlds.co.uk
